Emptying and Transport

In Kigali, the provision of faecal sludge collection and transportation services is done by the private sector. According to RURA’s regulation, manual emptying (i.e. entering the pit and using traditional tools like shovels) is prohibited.

It also issues licenses to operators and monitors compliance by licensees with license terms andconditions.

Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) Ltd

WASAC is the primary utility company responsible for the provision of water and sanitation services in Rwanda, including Kigali. In the context of FSM, WASAC is tasked with providing technical, operation and management expertise

Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA)

REMA has the mandate to see that sludge management practices do not harm the environment and that treatment facilities comply with national environmental standards.
