Sanitation Facilities
Currently, 62% of pit latrines in use are unlined, posing health and safety risks. While many households about 75% have improved the quality of their toilets with washable slabs, 25% still use non-washable surfaces.
Policy Framework
Standard Operating Procedures for Improved Faecal Sludge Management Services was developed in 2017 in collaboration with the Kisumu Public Health Office (PHO) and Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP). .
Emptying and Transport
Kisumu has a vibrant emptying market with 10s of tonnes of faecal waste reaching the treatment facility via formal manual emptiers each month. These services primarily serve the urban centres and do not reach the rural masses.

Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KIWASCO)
The Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KIWASCO) is responsible for sanitation services in Kisumu. It began its operations in July 2003 with a mandate to provide adequate clean water and to collect, treat, and dispose of sewerage (wastewater) within the jurisdiction of Kisumu City.
In 2019, the company changed its name from a ‘sewerage’ to ‘sanitation’ company underthe Water Act 2016, reflecting the expanded scope and mandate to ensuring the provision of safely managed sanitation services in Kisumu County. This change in mandate is still new and as such its reach remains limited in rural areas of the county, with its major activities concentrated within the city.
Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB)
WASREB a non-commercial State corporation that oversees the
implementation of policies and strategies relating to the provision of water and sewerage services. This includes regulating tariffs, monitoring the implementation of strategies, and producing annual
public reports.
Kenya Association of Waste Water Managers (KAWAWAMA)
Kenya Association of Waste Water Managers (KAWAWAMA) was created in 2018 and registered in 2019 under the Societies Act in Kenya by the Registrar of Societies. KAWAWAMA is a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and non-professionals within the waste water sector formed with the objectives of research on affordable, effective, efficient and simple waste water management practices.
