Exploring Innovative Sanitation Solutions: Pit Vac Field Observation in Lusaka

As part of the FSM Action Research Project, the Lusaka team was pleased to have hosted a successful field observation session focused on the Pit Vac technology, bringing together key stakeholders from across Zambia’s water and sanitation sector.

This engagement brought together representatives from the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC), WaterAid Zambia, Southern Water and Sanitation Company (SWASCO), Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company (WWSSC), Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company (KWSC), the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council(NWASCO) Council (NWASCO), and the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation (MWDS).

The field observation provided participants with an opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the operation, efficiency, and practicality of the Pit Vac technology in faecal sludge emptying. The visit also included a walkthrough of the Matero Treatment Plant, demonstrating how sludge from pits is emptied, safely transported, treated, and eventually reused for various productive purposes.

This engagement strengthened collaboration among sector players and reinforced our shared commitment to promoting sustainable, safe, and innovative sanitation solutions that enhance public health and environmental protection.
