The workshop brought together key sanitation stakeholders to discuss the safety and health of sanitation workers, with a focus on reducing risks through improved technology and better practices. Initial results on contamination levels found on the gloves and hands of pit emptiers using various technologies, such as the PuPu Pump, Gulper V4, Pitvaq, and exhauster trucks, were presented to the workers. The findings also identified specific behaviors that increase the risk of microbial ingestion. Sharing this information aimed to reinforce the critical importance of proper hygiene practices in protecting their health.
During the workshop discussions, Méthode Rutagungira, WASAC’s Director of Sanitation Services, reminded participants that Safety and hygiene are not just for their sake but a responsibility to their families and the communities they serve. “When you take preventive measures, you’re not protecting only yourself, but everyone around you,” He said. He also encouraged pit emptiers to remind each other of best practices and to reach out to the utility whenever they need their support.
As part of the safety commitment, participants received vaccinations and were provided with protective gear such as gloves, overalls, boots, face masks, and hats, essential for ensuring safer working conditions.
We were honored to be joined by representatives from Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA), WASAC Group, City of Kigali, and Water for People Rwanda, and we extend our gratitude to Emptiers Association (ASSERWA), who continue to champion safety and dignity in sanitation work.
