Pit Vidura hosted a successful workshop presenting initial findings from the FSM Action Research Project with key sanitation stakeholders in Kigali. This project investigates how to reduce costs while improving safety and expanding coverage of faecal sludge emptying and transport services throughout the city.
We shared comparative performance data on different emptying technologies (Pitvaq, Gulper V4, and PuPu Pump) across various city areas, along with occupational safety assessments for sanitation workers. Notable thanks to WASAC Group Ltd, Water For People, the service providers’ association, and local community leaders.
Participants showed particular interest in identifying appropriate technologies that could extend emptying services beyond high-income neighborhoods to approximately 60% of Kigali residents living in informal settlements. Stakeholders expressed appreciation for the evidence-based analysis provided, which will help inform their strategic investment decisions moving forward.
Community leaders provided compelling advocacy for their vulnerable communities and agreed to promote the adoption of formal emptying services among residents, contingent upon improved affordability of these essential services.
This collaborative engagement effectively demonstrated how targeted research can bring diverse stakeholders together to address critical service gaps, enabling regulators, utilities, and organizations to develop inclusive strategies that make vital sanitation services accessible to all residents of Kigali.
