FSM Ideation Workshop – Shaping the Next Phase of Sanitation Innovation in Lusaka

As the FSM Action Research Project moves into its next phase, Lusaka hosted an Ideation Workshop bringing together key stakeholders who have been central to implementing the project across the city.

The core team from CaDev_Catalyst Development shared preliminary research findings from the project, covering health and safety, time and motion, and cost analysis. These findings provided stakeholders with an opportunity to reflect on the progress made so far and discuss the implications of the emerging evidence for faecal sludge management service delivery in Lusaka.

The workshop also served as a platform to collaboratively explore the development of a Lusaka FSM Equipment Rental (Pay-Per-Use) Model. Through interactive discussions and group work, stakeholders contributed ideas on how such a model could be structured, governed, and implemented in a way that supports both service providers and the broader sanitation ecosystem.

Stakeholders engaged deeply in shaping the model, with regulators and utilities such as NWASCO and Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company providing guidance on implementation approaches, while service providers and pit emptiers shared critical insights on operational realities and sustainability. The collaborative group work helped refine how the model can work effectively within existing sanitation service delivery systems.

Special appreciation to all stakeholders who participated and contributed meaningfully:
National Water Supply and Sanitation Council(NWASCO), Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company, Lusaka City Council, Pit Emptiers Association, SNV, Youth WASH Ambassadors Club, Fresh Life, Chinvano Nchabwino, Geochi Services, Chazanga Water Trust and Kanyama Water Trust.
