Catalyst Development (CaDev) was delighted to host Mishek and Joseph from Fresh Life in Lusaka as part of the Project Advisory Group for the Sanitation Service Chain Action Research Project. Their visit marks another important step in strengthening collaboration between key players in Zambia’s sanitation sector.
Building Collaboration for Impact
The FSM Action Research Project brings together a diverse mix of stakeholders committed to improving sanitation services in Lusaka. Since last year’s kickoff workshop, these partners have been actively engaged in supporting the research journey, sharing expertise, and offering guidance.
While the Project Steering Committee — led by Lusaka City Council and the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company — oversees the project’s direction, the Advisory Group plays an equally vital role. Their mandate includes observing, reviewing, and providing valuable feedback on our field activities.
Testing Solutions in the Field
We are currently deep into data collection and technology testing, assessing how different faecal sludge management (FSM) solutions perform against three key criteria:
- Efficiency – How effectively each technology handles the collection and processing of sludge.
- Health and Safety – Ensuring that the methods protect workers, communities, and the environment.
- Cost-effectiveness – Evaluating affordability for sustainable implementation.
To ensure the process is inclusive and transparent, we have introduced Field Days. These allow advisory members to witness the work in action, interact with field teams, and contribute first-hand insights.
Fresh Life’s Contribution
Fresh Life, known for its container-based sanitation model currently implemented in Kafue, brings a wealth of practical experience to the table. Their approach offers innovative solutions to sanitation challenges, and their active participation adds significant value to the project’s discussions and decisions.
Moving Forward Together
The FSM Action Research Project continues to demonstrate that meaningful progress happens when expertise, innovation, and collaboration come together. We are grateful for the insights shared by Fresh Life and for the collective commitment of all stakeholders driving this important work forward.
